If you've ever glanced at a currency exchange board and wondered why there are always two different rates listed for each currency, you're not alone. Understanding the difference between buy and sell rates is fundamental to getting the best deal — and to understanding how money changers operate honestly.

It's About the Money Changer's Perspective, Not Yours

Here's the key insight: the rate labels are written from the money changer's point of view, not yours as the customer.

  • Buy Rate (Kurs Beli): The rate at which the money changer buys foreign currency from you. If you're selling USD to get IDR, the money changer applies this rate. It will always be the lower number.
  • Sell Rate (Kurs Jual): The rate at which the money changer sells foreign currency to you. If you want to buy USD using your IDR, this is the rate that applies. It will always be the higher number.

A Practical Example

Suppose the board at Fortitu shows:

  • USD Buy: 15,800
  • USD Sell: 16,050

If you walk in with USD 100 to sell, you will receive IDR 1,580,000 (at the buy rate). If you walk in wanting to buy USD 100, you will pay IDR 1,605,000 (at the sell rate). The IDR 25,000 spread per USD 100 is how the money changer earns its margin.

The Spread Is How Money Changers Are Compensated

A healthy, legitimate money changer makes its income from the spread between buy and sell rates — not from hidden fees. This is why transparency matters: a trustworthy provider will always display both rates clearly before you commit to a transaction.

If a money changer advertises an extraordinarily high buy rate or low sell rate that seems "too good to be true," inspect the fine print. Some operators offset attractive headline rates with flat service fees charged separately.

How to Quickly Compare Providers

The best way to compare is to calculate the mid-point rate (the average of buy and sell) and compare it to the mid-market rate on Google or XE. The closer the mid-point is to the mid-market rate, the better the overall deal you are getting — regardless of which direction you are exchanging.

At Fortitu, our rates are updated continuously throughout operating hours. We believe informed customers make the best customers, and we welcome you to compare before you exchange.
